Blood during storage and processing undergoes lysis releasing free heme, free hemoglobin and free iron (microparticles) which leads to additional red blood cell (RBC) damage. These microparticles and effete RBC'S cause iron overload, increased risk of infection, sepsis, organ damage and morbidity in chronic transfusion patients. Filtering blood before it is transfused to patients will reduce the occurence of iron overload and the need of chelation therapy,thus reducing the cost of treatment for both patients and the hospitals.
At Ex Vivo Dynamics we are aiming at solving a unmet medical need with are innovative and preventive technology.
We are designing a medical device that will filter blood from the microparticles and effete RBC's providing better quality of blood for transfusions.
